As I walked, I saw it: a wild daisy reaching for the morning sun.
Immediately I thought of my Sweet One, the one celebrated this special day. Hers is an eye for beauty. If there is beauty to be captured, seen, or discovered, she will find it. The rest of my walk became a mission to do the same. Living in Central Minnesota, wild flowers are easy to come by. Since this collection was for my Sweet One, I took great care with the different colors and varieties. Yet something was missing. I turned toward home, taking a section of the Paul Bunyan Trail to see if I could contribute to the bouquet. At the end of the trail, I spied the missing part: a beautiful unfurled fern. My daughter loves ferns, and it was just the greenery I needed. I took a leaf, the bouquet now finished. All was ready. What does this story have to do with home? It exemplifies a truth I showed my daughter through my actions: she matters. Home matters because it’s in the home that you first learn that you matter. Home is the nucleus, the center, where you learn who you are, that you are loved, that you matter to God and you matter to the world. Jesus said, “Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.” (Luke 12:6-7 NIV) You matter! The very hairs on your head are numbered! How loved and known you are! Home is where you learn Who the Source of this love is: Jesus. You learn that you matter so much to Him that the very hairs on your head are numbered. Home: where time, effort and energy have gone into making this space special for you, because you matter to God, you matter to me, you matter to the world. This is what I showed my daughter that day. Is it worth your time discussing, evaluating, dreaming, and cultivating your home? If you want your loved ones to know how they matter, then your answer is: ‘Yes!’ In your home of origin, what was something that showed you that you matter? Food! My mom always had our favorite foods on hand, and she still tries to make dishes she knows I like when we go visit. Now I do the same for my children-think of each of them when I’m grocery shopping!
