In retrospect I wonder why I was so bothered by it. Clearly my heart was not focused on his prayer! I am often rubbed wrong when the Lord begins to shine light on an area where I need growth.
How about you? Do you find yourself bristled by observing things you yourself need to grow in? That is exactly what happened to me here. This beautiful couple joined our small group. I learned from her. And about a year later, when the Lord shined the light on my need to grow in honoring my husband, guess who I called? She has a way of honoring her husband that I grew to admire. Sitting across the table from her at Chipotle, as she shared her story, I knew this woman was no push over. She is strong, steadfast, feisty, a leader, the queen of her household, the keeper of her home. The strength she displayed showed me the lie of this world as it tries to encourage us away from Biblical precedent regarding our relationships. The Lord’s ways are always best. She shared that she learned this from her mother, who after turning her life over to Jesus, grew in the conviction to honor her unbelieving husband. Her mother’s gentle, thoughtful, intentional honor for her spouse softened a hard heart. In time, her husband came to church with her, and eventually turned his life over to the Lord. So I took notes, learned from her, and began to put suggestions into practice. What a beautiful transformation it has been for our own marriage. Who blossoms under criticism? Who feels connected when they feel like they’re failing? Do you? Do you delight in your husband? Are you giddy to see him? Be with him? Know him? The challenge this week is to take an honest self-assessment. Do you honor your husband? How can you grow in this area? What is one step you can take? I can tell you this: I have a long way to grow. Yet I’ve also come a long way from where I was the day we said, “I do”. It is worth the work. Not only will your marriage relationship blossom, you also might find a personal joy that comes when you choose the Lord’s way. After all, obedience brings blessing.
